Greetings – My name is Armand Blake, and my shop, AMPWERX Repair, is located inside Gilmore Music on the NW corner of 7th. St. and Cherry Av. inLong Beach,CA. I have been there since 2003, however, Gilmore Music, a local independent full-service music store, has been there since before most of us were born. This store is not your corporate super-box, and as far as the repair of electronic and acoustic musical instruments are concerned, we do it all in-house.

Long Beach Independent has been kind enough to let me write a few tech articles for their website.

These articles will be very simple.

I’m going to structure the articles to be only a few paragraphs long. They will be suitable for those who are just beginning their musical journey, and would like to know how to take care of their stuff. I have had musician’s come into my shop and say, “Oh, man – I think I blew it up my self!” Stuff will break… It has to – it’s the 2nd. Law of Thermodynamics: Entropy! Stuff wears out, gets old, and now and again some little widget will just decide it’s a good day to die! But the idea is to keep that stuff to a minimum. There are things that you should do for your gear, and ways that you can prevent bad stuff from happening to it.

There are many fine publications that will have a more ‘technical’ viewpoint for those who would like to get deeper into the physics and electronics of their equipment, and if or when you come by my shop, I will turn you on to some of them.

I am a supporter of you being knowledgeable about your equipment. To have valuable gear and not know how to care for it can lead to costly and even injurious mistakes.

Being knowledgeable means you know where and how to find the resources to take proper care of your gear. It means knowing where and how to get the tools and know-how to do your own electrical troubleshooting, if necessary. It also means having an idea of what you should or shouldn’t do, and when to stop the DIY project and seek professional care, as they say. It means keeping both you, and your gear, safe!

The actual point is so you can create without distraction. You and your gear together, are the instrument that your creative self plays through. Let us keep that process as untroubled and undisturbed as possible.

At AMPWERX Repair, bringing something by, plugging it up, turning it on and talking about it is free. If it’s something simple that I can do for you in 10 – 20 minutes, it’s a buck a minute plus parts. I do have Bench Fees for various types of gear that will get you an estimate and are applied to the repair. I’m here 10-5, Monday through Friday, and I’m gone for lunch between 1pm & 2pm.

AMPWERX is not a parts store, but a repair service, and I will help you to find what you need. I can’t answer a bazillion questions, nor can I train you as to how to work your gear. That’s what your Owner’s Manual is for, but I will help you nail down what the problem is and get it fixed.

Thank you for your kind attention.

Thanks… Armand
