Hidden along a stretch of Anaheim street in the heart of Long Beach lies everyone’s favorite local watering hole, Alex’s Bar.

The place is easy to miss as the entrance is actually in the back and if you are lucky enough to grab a spot in their small parking lot you can avoid parking on the street or, as many have mistakenly done, parking in the adjacent Autozone where they will tow your ass quick. Alex’s is home to a host of cool local bands and regularly gets larger touring acts to do small intimate shows. Coupled with a cool “dia de los muertos” red and black look, sweet photo booth, and cheap drinks this local spot is a great choice any night of the week. Typically free to get in, unless there is a show some of the most popular nights are live band karaoke with Mr. Mister Miyagi, and the one man legend Phil Shane who does a great lounge act. While the drinks may be cheap it can be a tough place to get a drink when it’s packed and most come in plastic cups. Scenes from the HBO series “True Blood” were filmed at Alex’s Bar as well as parts of “Tenacious D: The Pick of Destiny“.

The sound system is excellent at Alex’s Bar and is one of the best places to see live music in Long Beach. With a corner stage that has ample room for a 5 piece band and most of the venue being open space for dancing and tightly packed shows the sound experience is always good. Here are the specs on their sound system:

  • Allen & Heath GL 3300 32 Track Mixer
  • Inter M GEQ 1231 D 31 band Graphic EQ for FlH (Mono System)
  • DBX 231 Graphic 31 band EQ for Monitors
  • Behringer Multicom Pro XL MDX 4600 Gate / Compressor
  • Behringer Composer MDX 2100 Gate / Compressor (2)
  • Lexicon MX 200 (Reverb)
  • Lexicon MPX 100 (Delay)
  • SM 58 (Vox Mics)
  • SM 57 (Instrument Mics)
  • QSC, Mackie, and BGW Amps
  • Yamaha SM15V monitors

Alex’s bar is notoriously hard to book a show at as they get TONS of requests from bands on a daily basis. The best course of action is get on a bill with a band that play there semi-regularly or send them a request and make sure to include a link to a video!
